Map the views first
Sketch the floor plan and identify the areas where a useful recording would matter most. Look for glare from windows and showcases, poor nighttime lighting, blocked sightlines and the distance between the camera and the subject.
Plan recording and access
Decide whether you need continuous or event-based recording, where footage will be stored and who can view or export it. Compare recorder capacity, internet dependence, account security, updates and the process for recovering footage.
Check installation costs
Include cabling, power, mounts, storage drives and installation in your quote. Discuss the layout and any insurance conditions with the installer and insurer. Confirm any applicable recording or notice requirements for your location before enabling audio.
Compare these details
- Actual daytime and nighttime sample footage
- Wired PoE versus wireless power and network needs
- Recording storage and retention settings
- Export format and permission controls
- Installation, subscriptions and replacement parts
Ask before buying
- Can we read the details we need at this distance and lighting?
- What continues recording during an internet interruption?
- Who owns the administrator account and how do we remove an employee’s access?
